Habitat for Humanity homes in Okotoks
At Habitat, our goal is to bridge the gap between renting and owning by offering an affordable mortgage with no down payment and no interest. We’ve been working with Albertans for nearly 30 years and have helped nearly 300 families buy a home and build stability.
We’re driven by the demonstrated need, research revealing the considerable lack of affordable housing, and the recent Vital Signs report, where Calgarians said affordable housing is one of their top three concerns.
We’re inspired by the hundreds of volunteers and thousands of donors who work side-by-side with us throughout southern Alberta to build affordable housing and support our neighbours who want safe, secure homes for their families.
Because families purchase the home at Fair Market Value, our program criteria, including debt thresholds, are in place to ensure families are set up for success long-term and are able to achieve financial stability. Monthly mortgage payments are capped at 25 per cent of household income, and homeowners receive budgeting and home maintenance classes as additional support.
With each community we build in we work closely with community partners to determine the need for our program and identify families; however, the economy and housing markets continue to change.
Through these changes, with our communities, we are exploring more ways to help families. With the communities of Okotoks, Brooks and Mountain View County we are not breaking ground on new projects for now, but our projects in Calgary are on track and will continue.
